First day hike

The first rays of sun slipped over the horizon of the pacific ocean and painted the sky of first day of 2018 like an oil painting of blues, yellows, pinks and oranges. The day blossomed into a beautiful Sunshine Coast day in western Canada. After a breakfast of pancakes and maple syrup we headed out to the enticingly named "Smuggler's Cove" and "Secret Cove". On the way we passed a hardy group getting ready to brave the freezing temperatures and take on the annual Polar Bear Swim, hmm, maybe next year...

Our path wound through majestic Douglas Fir and Western Red Cedar trees, with tantalising views into rocky coves peeking through the branches. Smuggler's Cove looked like an enticing anchorage, maybe on for Narwhal to visit on a future adventure? The views from the headland out across the islands were fantastic, but the biggest treat was still to come...

Saving the best for last, as we crossed frozen flooded woodland, there in front of us was a beaver! This Canadian icon graced us with his presence for a whiule before diving under the ice, flicking his tail and continuing with his busy day.
