What were my favourite things to photograph in the arctic?

Photographing the arctic

Photographing the arctic

We have been fortunate to have seen some stunning sights and experienced some wonderful wildlife encounters whilst Narwhal has been voyaging in the arctic. Regular followers of Narwhal’s exploits will know that one of my favourite ways of sharing these is with photographs. It is fair to say that the sound of my shutter clicking away is a common sound onboard. So much so that after six months of exploring my memory cards and hard drives are fit to bursting. How to tackle and make sense of so many images, not to mention the best way to weed out all of the pictures of  empty bits of sea that fractions of a second before pressing the shutter revealed a whale. Maybe I should request Lightroom add an ‘almost but not quite a picture of a whale’ filter to their next update, feels a little bit overwhelming. Looking back through the images brings back so many wonderful memories, I thought a good way to start might be by sharing some of the things that I have enjoyed photographing the most during our arctic adventures.

Wildlife

So I might as well start with a pretty obvious one, the wildlife. Narwhal followers will know that we have had no shortage of whale encounters this season. These sightings have just been so wonderful, on occasions the sights and proximity of some truly amazing animals has almost reduced me to tears. Capturing the majesty and wonder of being up close to some of the true wonders of nature feels like quite a daunting task for my photography skills. Not to mention that that whales have a habit of showing up unpredictably and disappearing just as quickly leaving you with a kind of water borne hide and seek. While the whales may be the poster boys (and girls) of the arctic ocean wildlife, the smaller species were just as enjoyable to photograph. Here are a few of my favourites I hope you enjoy them and feel a little bit if the arctic wonder…

It wasn’t just the big mammals that we a joy to photograph, photographing this is a fulmar soaring over a glacier in Kongsfjord was fun too!

The arctic wasn’t just about the wildlife and in my next blog I’ll share some of my other top photography loves from the frozen north.

If you are interested in joining us on a dedicated photography expedition on board the good ship, Narwhal, you are in luck, we have scheduled just such an expedition for next year. Find out more…
