Why we love to SUP and sail
Are paddle boards and sailing boats perfect adventure companions?
We think so. One of the things that I find most magical about paddle boarding is how closely connected to the environment and the ocean you feel when you are out on the water. On those wonderful calm days when reflections bob soothingly on the polished-glass surface of the ocean the underwater world is spread out in plane view right beneath your feet.
My heart leaps with joy every time I catch a glimpse of a crab scuttling about it’s business, the myriad reflections from a shoal of fish, all turning and sparking in perfect time with each other appear as if by magic or my board drifts over a plump starfish like a colourful surprise. But all too soon this magical connection has to come to and end, I take my last paddle stroke, my board glides gently up the shore and just like that I feel my feet back on solid ground. Before I know it my world consists of a car park, I am packing up my board, loading up the car, saying good bye to paddle buddies and pulling away inner separate directions, the ocean world receding in my rear view mirror.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful not to have to sever this connection at the end of a paddle? To enjoy the comfort of slipping tired arms into warm, dry, cosy jumpers. To enjoy the camaraderie of reliving the adventures of the day, our hands wrapped around steaming mugs of hot chocolate while we remain immersed in the ocean environment. There is something truly magical about holding this unbroken connection to the ocean. Of feeling not like a temporary visitor to the ocean world but one who is whole heartedly embraced within it, experiencing it’s changes and rhythms. Watching the sun melt towards the horizon as the wildlife begins to go about it’s evening activities, birds return to their nesting sites while seals and dolphins enjoy some evening feeding, sights that would go unwitnessed while negating traffic on the M5.
It was this desire to become immersed in the ocean environment that led Eric and I to move our lives onboard our sailing yacht Narwhal. Very quickly we realised that these magical moments were to good not to share and Narwhal Expeditions was born. Our mission to share this magic of living on the ocean. When we started Narwhal Expeditions we were looking for a way to share adventures that bring people closer to nature as well as to helping to protect what environment that we love. We have found that sail boat based paddle board adventures are a fantastic way to achieve both. So we have organised a dedicated SUP and sail expedition in arctic Norway next year. Travelling by sail boat we will have a movable base camp, giving us access to remote spots only accessible by water as well as the flexibility to choose where to paddle each day, not to mention the safety and comfort of a hot meal, that steaming mug of hot chocolate and a warm bed to come back to each night. There will be space for six happy paddles on board, want to be one of them?
