Clean Up the Arctic Expedition Report - First look results

ocean-clean-up-expedition-6

I am so proud of all of the crew who took part in our Clean Up the Arctic expeditions this year. During these expeditions we learn more about and take action to protect the wonderful ocean environment that we voyage through. Leaving the ocean in Narwhal’s wake a bit cleaner than we found it. Living on the ocean we experience both it’s beauty and the challenges that it is facing first hand. These expeditions give us the opportunity to share both with likeminded people. There is space on board Narwhal for four ocean loving crew to join us on each expedition. We had such an enthusiastic response this year that we were able to run not one, but two Clean Up the Arctic expeditions. That meant that the double sized crew could learn twice as much about the ocean, collect twice as much data for our science partners, clean twice as many beaches and remove twice as much plastic from arctic beaches, awesome! Here is a first look at what we got up to and what we found lurking on the arctic beaches…

The first expedition focussed on the islands in the Svalbard archipelago, far north in the high arctic. The second expedition started in Svalbard, took our mission out across the remote Barent’s sea, finishing in northern Norway.

Life on board the expedition

A little look at the crew in action :) See what it is like living on board Narwhal in the arctic while conducting ocean surveying and tackling plastic pollution.

Micro plastics high in the arctic ocean

One of our research aims was to look at the presence of micro plastics in the surface ocean in the high arctic. More on the results and revelations that we had from this to follow soon once the numbers have been crunched..

Clean Up the Arctic Expeditions 2020

Some things that we can say for certain from our expeditions is that there is still so much more to learn about our oceans, there is still a huge amount of plastic on remote arctic beaches and that there is no shortage of passionate people who want to take action to protect our oceans. We felt we simply had to follow up the success of this year’s expedition with another Clean Up the Arctic expedition for 2020, so we scheduled one! Based around the islands of Svalbard in late June early July, and it has booked up already! With so many people keen to take part, and so much valuable work to do, we have added one more clean up and research expedition to our itinerary for 2020. This expedition will be a little shorter and based in northern Norway so will be ideal if you can’t get too much time off work but still want to play your part. I have a feeling this expedition will book up pretty fast too, find out more and sign up here.
